FLUTE COMPETITIONS & SCHOLARSHIPS

JAMES CARSON MEMORIAL PRIZE

The James Carson Memorial Flute Prize (also known as the James Carson Flute Competition) is a scholarship with advanced flutists competing for prize money plus a trophy with each winner's name engraved on it! The event is held in two rounds, a preliminary round, and then a final concert. This prestigious flute event is held in memory of the Flute Guild's founder, James Carson, who was principal flutist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for 23 years, and lecturer in flute at the Conservatorium from 1957 until 1979.  Click on the buttons below to enter this prestigious competition and to find out more about supporting the running of this Memorial Prize.

performance opportunities

FLUTE performers Day (NON- COMPETITIVE )

If you are looking for an opportunity to gain stage confidence, to perform or practice for your upcoming exams with constructive feedbacks, this is for you!  


The Flute Performers Day is a non- competitive event open to  all flute players. 

Get in quick as spaces are limited! A strict time limit applies- this means you can choose to perform any piece or pieces of music you wish to perform, as long as they fit into the time limit.  All participants will receive a certificate and professional feedbacks. 


There will be four sections, based on ability. 


  • Beginner Section: Preliminary - Grade 2 AMEB or equivalent 

                   Accompaniment will be provided for these performers at no extra charge

                   (included in the entry fee)

                   Time Limit: 3 minutes 


  • Intermediate Section: Grades 3-5 AMEB or equivalent 

                    Accompaniment will be provided for these performers at no extra charge

                    (included in the entry fee) 

                   Time Limit: 5 minutes  


  • Advanced Section: Grade 6-8 AMEB or equivalent and over 

                   Accompaniment will be provided for these performers at no extra charge

                    (included in the entry fee) 

                    Time Limit: 8 minutes 


  • Open Section: Certification of Performance and beyond

                   An official accompaniment will be available for this event with a 

                   discounted rate. Otherwise performers must engage their own

                   accompanist for this level.  

                   Time Limit: 10 minutes 


  • Adult Amateur Section: Adult learners at any playing level.

                   An official accompaniment will be available for this event.

                   Time Limit: 8 minutes 


Performance Opportunity

Date: 31st August, 2025

Applications Close: TBC, 2025

Venue: Nickson Room, QU School of Music

Entry: Live performance 

Time Limit applies to each section.

Condition of Entry: Must be a current member of the Queensland Flute Guild to perform and enjoy the benefit of performing with the official accompanist for free on the day of performance, as well as to have rehearsals at a discounted rate.

James Carson Flute Scholarship - 12 months use

The Queensland Flute Guild offer two Sankyo flutes for use by two talented individuals for 12 months. These flutes are offered by the family of James Carson, and the family of Larissa Dial. James Carson was principal flutist of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for 23 years, and lecturer in flute at the Conservatorium from 1957 until his death in 1979. He was the founder of the Queensland Flute Guild.

Larissa Dial Flute Scholarship- 12 months use

The Queensland Flute Guild offer two Sankyo flutes for use by two talented individuals for 12 months. These flutes are offered by the family of James Carson, and the family of Larissa Dial.  Larissa Dial began flute tuition with a Yamaha Flute in Grade 4 of primary school. She progressed and became a member of the Queensland Youth Orchestra. It was at the end of high school that she purchased a French Silver Sankyo flute which she used for her flute study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Larissa was both a performer and a flute teacher. She especially loved Mozart’s music. Larissa passed away aged 40 years in 2015 after battling cancer and her family have kindly offered Larissa's flute to this scholarship.
